PRESS RELEASE November 29, 2004
Access Energy LLC Will Provide Renewable Energy to Pennsylvania
Use of methane gas from landfill offers renewable energy to more than 2,600 households
PARK CITY, UT, November 29, 2004, Access Energy, LLC (“Access”) along with its strategic ally G.A.S. Energy Technology, Inc. (“G.A.S.”), today announced plans to develop a 2,600 kilowatt clean, renewable-energy power project at a landfill in McClellandtown, PA. The landfill is owned and operated by Onyx Chestnut Valley landfill, Inc., a subsidiary of Onyx Waste Services, Inc. Onyx Waste Services, Inc. is an Onyx North America company (“Onyx”). The renewable energy project will convert methane gas from the landfill into electricity and is expected to be operational by year-end 2005.
“This project is an outstanding example of how in Pennsylvania there is a commitment to the development of renewable energy so that we can protect our environment and reduce dependence on traditional fossil fuels,” said Robert McClenachan, Access’s president. “All landfills produce methane gas as waste decomposes and Onyx Waste Services demonstrates its leadership in caring for the environment by embracing this innovative use of landfill gas, which would otherwise have no beneficial use,” he added.
Onyx Waste Services, Inc. is a fully integrated waste service company providing solid-waste collection, transfer, recycling and disposal services. This initiative is only one example of the organization’s commitment to environmental sustainability in the communities they serve. “Onyx Chestnut Valley is excited about this opportunity to use this renewable gas in a beneficial way” according to Dean Mori, the General Manager for the landfill.
The Access Energy and G.A.S. alliance will install and operate electric-generating units totaling approximately two megawatts that will be capable of providing more than 2,600 average households with clean, environmentally-friendly electricity. The project is expected to operate for at least 15 years.
“This and the advanced development of several other projects represent significant milestones in the implementation of the Access G.A.S. landfill-gas-to-energy strategy,” said McClenachan.
The combustion of landfill gases is an economically and environmentally responsible use of naturally forming gases. Utilizing these renewable gases to produce electricity also offsets the need to consume fossil fuels such as coal or oil. The electricity produced from this renewable energy project will conserve the equivalent to 275,000 barrels of oil per year. In addition, combusting methane gas decreases the amount of greenhouse gases emitted into the atmosphere.
